André Bloc was an engineer, architect, artist, publisher, and art critic. In 1930, he founded the journal l'architecture d'aujourd'hui, which crystallized critical debates of the post-war period and disseminated international modernism. In 1951, he joined the spatialist movement and founded the Espace group with Félix Del Marle, whose goal was to integrate the arts into architecture in order to promote the essential collaboration between painters, sculptors, and architects.
André Bloc was a great friend of my grandfather, the artist Jean Peyrissac; they had met in Algiers. In 1951, André Bloc asked Jean Peyrissac to join the Espace group. They maintained a vast correspondence from 1946 to 1964. (Peyrissac archives)

In this collage, André Bloc exploits all the possibilities of balance between forms and values. He transforms his collage into a painting, whose structure is affirmed by the precision of the cutouts; he emphasizes the contours while the surface comes to life through the juxtaposition of the papers.
